May the Dove Land on Your Heart!

“Then he sent out a dove to see if the water had receded from the surface of the ground.  But the dove could find no place to set its feet because there was water over all the surface of the earth; so it returned to Noah in the ark.  He reached out his hand and took the dove and brought it back to himself in the ark.  He waited seven more days and again sent out the down from the ark.  When the dove returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf!  Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth.  He waited seven days and sent the dove out again, but this time it did not return to him.” (Genesis 8:8-12)

Sometimes I wonder why it is so hard to find peace in my heart.  Even when there is nothing serious going on in my life I find myself struggling inside.  Then I don’t have to say how bad I am when things are getting out of control.

A story from Genesis gives me a hint to my troubled heart.  It is water filled in my heart.  God sent out a dove hoping to land on my heart, but there is no place to land on in my heart because water covered up all the surface of my heart.  The dove returns to God when it is not received by me.  This is the same principle Jesus gave his disciples when he sent them out for the ministry.  “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’  If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; if not it will return to you.” (Luke 10:5)

We need to have room for the dove to land on.  Whatever situation you are in now, what you need is to claim room for God in your heart.  Soaking into the water and worrying about your situation keeps God’s dove from landing on your heart.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:4)

Believe it or not, God keeps sending out doves to you without any interval.  If you are under water you may not see it.  May you not look down into the water but head up and look above where the peace of God is hovering around!  May the dove land on your heart!  Amen, Amen
