Be Still

Be still and know that I am God.  (Ps. 46:10a)

Advent is here!  The time for preparation in many areas; first and foremost is to ready ourselves for the coming birth of Jesus Christ.  There are countless things to be done during the next month--decorating, shopping, purchasing gifts, attending annual Christmas events and special church programs.  It is so easy to lose focus and even become lost in the Advent shuffle.

Be still and know that I am God.

During this busy season, it is even more important to schedule time alone with God.  For me it is necessary to rise very early in the morning to sing, read Scripture and to pray.  One suggestion is to purchase and Advent calendar that has a verse for each day of Advent.  Read the Christmas story from Matthew or Luke to compare and contrast the events.  Make a list of people who need your focused prayer support now--those who may be lonely, sad or grieving a recent loss of some kind.  Let them know through a call or card that they are being remembered.  Find time to be with your family to watch a timeless Christmas movie or play a board game one night a week.  Shut off the cell phones and Blackberry devices for an evening and return to the quiet of recent years.

Be still and know that I am God.

Maybe finding one person you can be accountable to in your quest to "be still" would be helpful.  Check in with each other weekly to offer a word of encouragement or to pray together.  November went by us in a flash.  May December hold a few memorable moments in which our Spirits are nurtured by God's grave through His Word and by the Holy Spirit.

Praying for a quieter Advent Season,

Pastor Beth
