Imagine No Malaria

Imagine No Malaria is the United Methodist church-wide effort to overcome malaria in Africa and eliminate deaths caused by this preventable disease.

  • Malaria is preventable
  • Malaria infects nearly 500 million people each year and more than 1 million of those who become infected die
  • Ninety percent of deaths caused by malaria occur in Africa
  • Malaria is a leading killer of children in Africa
  • Every 60 seconds a child in Africa dies from malaria

In addition to preventing malaria with bed nets, eliminating deaths caused by this disease will require educating communities and health care workers, developing health care infrastructure and making advancements in health care communications.  Imagine No Malaria will create a stronger and more broad-based community health infrastructure to help The United Methodist Church in the fight against diseases of poverty.  Nothing But Nets remains a key component of the campaign against malaria.  (information on malaria extracted from website)

According to the CDC, although progress has been made in the last 10 years toward developing malaria vaccines, there is currently no effective malaria vaccine on the market.  There is a vaccine that has completed Phase II testing with reduced cases of malaria in young children 5 to 17 months by 53%, which seems to warrant further testing.

BUMC has committed to raising $2500 for this mission.  $10 saves one person in this campaign against malaria.   We presently have over $800 for this mission - enough to save 80 people from death by malaria.  Money collected next Communion Sunday will be specified for this mission.  We will continue efforts to raise money to meet our goal to save 250 people.  A container for donations is at the back of the sanctuary, or a check can be written to the church and designated "Imagine No Malaria".
